Deprescribing #70 Rick Hill, 50 Year Cancer Survivor, Author
Fifty years ago, Rick Hill faced a harrowing diagnosis: Stage 3 Embryonal Cell Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. It began as testicular cancer but quickly spread to his lymphatic system, becoming systemic. In 1974, doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, delivered grim news. They scheduled him for chemotherapy and advised him to bring his family to say their goodbyes. But Rick Hill defied the odds—and the conventional path.
Rather than pursuing chemotherapy with little hope of success, Rick sought an alternative. A pastor friend introduced him to Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. Leaving chemotherapy behind, Rick traveled to Oasis, where he embarked on a groundbreaking treatment plan centered on Laetrile (Vitamin B17), detoxification, and holistic healing. Against all odds, Rick made a full recovery. Now, five decades later, his remarkable story stands as a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of alternative medicine.
Rick’s life after recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary. A man of many talents, he became a talk-show host on WSBR radio in Boca Raton, a satire columnist for the Boca Raton News, and even an inventor. He co-invented an ozone air purifier that reduces mold, bacteria, and viruses in homes and offices, a patent he later sold to Shaklee Corporation. His accomplishments in business soared as he became Senior VP of Sales at Shaklee, personally generating $50 million in sales in a single year.
Eventually, Rick retired to San Diego to enjoy life with his grandchildren. But his connection to Oasis of Hope remained strong. He volunteered his time conducting nutritional cooking shows for patients, leading new patient orientations, and attending lectures by the hospital’s renowned Dr. Francisco Contreras. His dedication led to his appointment as the hospital’s Director of Admissions in 2013, solidifying his commitment to helping others navigate their own cancer journeys.
